Episode 1 The Mortal Cup

A cup that can change the Shadow World and a very interesting motley crew of beings hell bent on making sure that doesn’t happen. Three of them because it is the job they love doing. One because it is very very personal and she doesn’t care who she steps on to get where she wants to be. One that is there because he would follow his BFF anywhere. And one who will do his best to not get drug into it at all.

Buckle up, kids. Because the Shadowhunters, and their associates, are something we’ve not seen before.

I absolutely love this opening scene. It is dark and mysterious. It is an introduction to Alec, Jace, Izzy, and their world that makes you want to know what the hell is happening and who are these beautiful people. Are they the good guys? The bad guys? Somewhere in between? I knew, the first time I watched this show, that I was going to love this team.

Seeing Alberto as Simon was very strange. I came to this show already knowing him as Gallo from Chicago Fire. But Simon Lewis won my heart quickly.

Listen! I have interestingly coloured green eyes. But Luke’s beautiful, emerald wolf eyes make mine look boring in comparison.

The first time I saw the stele, I was so excited. It looks very similar to my wand. Except mine has a wooden shaft with gems on the staff. And crystals at each end.

Clary! I’m going to need you to remember that your mom tried to talk to you. But you were too concerned about going out with Simon to take two seconds to sit and listen to her.

I love that our introduction to Magnus is him defending a young Clary against Jocelyn. Even if he did give in and do what she asked. It shows, from the start, that the man that will become our favorite warlock does have a heart.

The first time I saw Alec and Izzy together, without Izzy wearing the white wig, I really thought they were twins. They’re both dark haired, sarcastic, and oh so beautiful!

And no, I did not read the books until months after I saw the show.

Whoever did the casting for this show really knew what they were doing. Watching this show for the first time, last May, I was floored by just how beautiful everyone is. I had to stop and wonder if these were real people because they are all so damn pretty.

Especially Daddario…

Simon’s look of confusion, as he watches Clary talk to no one, is absolutely hilarious. Alberto sold the hell out of this scene. And it makes me giggle every time.

Yellow eyed Magnus is such a vibe. Especially when he gets all tough and dominating like this.

And speaking of unbelievably pretty people, can we take a minute to just admire the breathing art that is Harry Shum Jr.!!

Izzy is such a badass. And I love that she can fight like this!

Watching Alec and Jace fight together is just mesmerizing. The way they move in sync and with inherent faith in each other is just magical. If I didn’t already know about Malec (the reason I came to this show in the first place) I would have thought they were a couple.

But, let’s be real, Alec deserves someone that will truly see him. And as much as I love Jace, he is not that man. Jace is far to self involved for someone like Alec.

Holy Hell, this fire took off fast. I mean, I know it’s magical - powered by Rune magic - but this was insane.

And I just realized that Jocelyn lit this fire by drawing a Rune on her hand!!

Remember that detail when we get to season 2.

Excellent timing, Jace. Oh how I love a fellow master of sarcasm and dry wit! Which is why Jace is definitely in my top 5 of favorites. Most of the time.

I enjoy the fact that Alec does not trust Clary. Or even really like her. Jace and Izzy are taken with her, immediately. But not our suspicious older brother. Alec is not having it.

For someone that says she wants to know what is going on, Clary sucks at shutting up and listening. She really really irritates my soul in this scene. Every time, all I can think is ‘Girl shut up and let the man explain.’

Poor sweet Simon. That face when Jace and the dead guy appear out of nowhere is so precious.

See ya next time for The Descent Into Hell Isn’t Easy.
